Selecting Right Healthy Food to Eat

Fruits and Vegetables

Good thing about vegetables and fruits is that they are high in nutrients while being low on calories and can be part of your healthy recipes.

In addition to it, you should aim to include deep colored vegetables and fruits in your healthy diet since they have higher concentration of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Greens: Your healthy recipes should have more of broccoli, kale, Chinese cabbage and mustard greens since all of them have high concentration of iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, vitamins such as A, K, C and zinc.

Sweet Vegetables: Sweet potatoes, corn, squash, beets, yams, carrots and beets fall in category of naturally sweet vegetables. These easily turn any diet into a healthy diet and inculcate healthy sweetness into meals as well as assist in reducing yearning for sugar.

Fruits: Fruits are rich source of vitamins, fibers as well as different antioxidants and you can use them to create your own tasty recipe. Fruits such as berries are known for their cancer fighting properties, while apples are rich in fibers and oranges being good source of Vitamin C.


Whole Grains and Carbs

Carbs are good in providing long lasting energy while whole grains are well known for their antioxidants as well as phytochemicals that safeguard us from certain types of cancers, heart diseases and diabetes.

Healthy and Unhealthy Carbs

Healthy Carbs: Benefit of healthy carbs is that they get digested at a slow pace which makes you feel full for a longer time period, stabilizes insulin levels and blood sugar levels. Whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans are good sources of healthy carbs and can be used in any tasty recipe.

Unhealthy Carbs: Bad thing about them is that they get digested rather quickly and lead to sudden rise of blood sugar levels. Some common sources of these unhealthy carbs include refined sugar and white flour.

Healthy Fats

Advantage of healthy fats is that they nourish your heart as well as brain and are good for your skin and hair. If any food item contains omega-3 fats then it can lower cardiovascular diseases, prevent dementia and enhance your mood.

Your diet thus should have:

Monounsaturated Fats: Such fats are present in avocados, almonds, peanut oil, hazelnuts, sesame seeds, olive oil and pumpkin seeds. These can be part of easy recipes that you can use daily.

Omega-3, Omega-6 & Polyunsaturated Fats: These are present in fatty fish like sardines, salmon and herring. Soybean, unheated sunflower and flaxseed oils are also good sources of polyunsaturated fats and are generally included in easy recipes.
