Everyone is excited over the news that Kraft is removing synthetic colors from their macaroni and cheese. Kraft's spokespeople claim the change is being implemented to address customers demands for improved nutrition and simpler ingredients.
I have an even better change you can try. A 4 ingredient macaroni and cheese that you can easily make yourself. You are already cooking the noodles, adding milk, butter and a cheese package. This homemade version doesn't require any additional steps and puts you in charge of your family's nutrition.
What is Kraft Changing?
Instead of using Yellow dyes number 5 and 6 to provide that familiar bright orange coloring, Kraft will be using ingredients like paprika, annatto and turmeric. While I love to add a variety of spices to my meals for all of the health benefits, Kraft seems to be focusing on the color issue.
I'm not a big fan of bright, fake colored food for children. In the long run, it's better to teach our children what real food looks like and tastes like. While Kraft may still be locked into the idea that its macaroni and cheese needs that bright color, at least they decided to use a natural approach.
Paprika is wonderful spice that is packed with a variety of nutrients. In addition, both annatto and turmeric have anti-inflammatory properties. These spices also tend to have strong pungent and peppery flavors. However, Kraft states that the new versions taste the same as your old favorites.
Easy 4 Ingredient Mac and Cheese
Ingredients:
8 ounces 100% Whole Wheat Elbow Noodles
8 ounces (or 2 cups grated) Cheddar Cheese
2 Tablespoon Butter
1 cup Milk
Note: you can also personalize your recipe by using your favorite cheese or mix of cheeses: Cheddar, American, Muenster, Monterey Jack, Parmesan
Directions:
1. Cook macaroni according to package directions and drain.
2. In a saucepan, melt butter. Add cheese and mile and stir well.
3. Add cooked macaroni to saucepan and mix until macaroni is coated with cheese. If needed, you can add a little more milk to thin out the cheese sauce.
4. Enjoy!
Add Your Own Nutritional Boost!
If you like the idea of a nutritional and/or flavor boost, you have a lot of choices. Choose your favorite spice such as cayenne pepper, coriander, or smoked paprika. Chop up some spinach or grate some carrots to add vegetables to your dish. A sprinkle of flax or chia seeds also adds a nice touch.
Make It a Family Cooking Party
This recipe is so simple and easy that you can use it to teach your kids how to cook. It's even easy to personalize since you can make the standard recipe and let everyone decide if they want to add the extra flavor and nutritional boosts. There's no need to wait until 2016 when Kraft will finish modifying its product line to remove preservatives and artificial colors. You can start eating a simple and health macaroni and cheese today. It's easy.
